holiday hangover
Going back to drinking water and eating salad after 2+ weeks of home cookin', ordering up bagels and coffee, Five Guys, Zaftig's and chowdah is simply No Fun. It's like a big old pile of Mondays.
I missed yall! How was your New Year? Mine was superfantastic, more to come on that later...

note to self
Do not watch "breaking bonaduce" before bedtime. You will have dreams of angry red-headed dwarves trying to drag you into rehab.

People are blogging the hurricane, (updated to add: including this local news station, and how to volunteer in N'awlins) staying in touch, offering first-hand accounts and updates on the storm. It's interesting to see how LJ's phone posts are working when the power - and internet - can't. LJ users have opened up their homes to near-strangers who couldn't evacuate in time. As much as I love seeing the power of blogs connecting people, I feel the most for people who don't have those sort of luxuries at their disposal. Donate to the Red Cross, won't you?
There's a whole page on Technorati that Niall set up, too.
Keep safe down there, yall.

algebraic advice
Recently, I was feeling a little disconcerted about making choices. A smart fella told me to compare what I wanted from a particular situation to what I was getting out of said situation. Compare the two and find out what the difference is. If it's not that great a gap, you're doing just fine.

because someone's always said it better already
"If we listened to our intellect, we'd never have a love affair. We'd never have a friendship. We'd never go into business because we'd be cynical. Well, that's nonsense. You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down."
-- Ray Bradbury

in the mail
A co-worker today told me that his gramma used to tell the mailman "I don't want anything but checks and love letters."
Me either.

walking ghosts
Sitting in a swank club in Miami a few years ago, I heard a producer/dj I adored refer to the "walking ghosts" in the room. He was referring to "ya know, birds I shagged, but I don't remember their names," but I think the term is ambiguous enough to go beyond. The ones who stop and ask you about how things are, and you stand there, blanking on their name, or how it was you met them. Those people you see walking down the street, and you can't quite remember why their faces resonate with you. Taking the cognition out of recognition.

hometown reprazent
A group of DC folks are lobbying to name the new baseball stadium "Taxation Without Representation Field". After all, we DID get license plates with that slogan.

skate or die
Every time I hear skateboard wheels on concrete, I still look to see if the boy is cute or not. And most of the time, he's like, in grade school.
Does anyone else do this? I feel like it's a very "My So Called Life" era thing.

proud of being #2
My favorite high school teacher, the fabulously smart Dr. Pfennig, used to talk about creating a scholarship for the salutatorian, the one who was second best. After all, they tried just as hard as the first place winner, but must suffer the indignity of instead being the first loser. After all, it’s not called “sitting next to the blue ribbon, we have this red ribbon, which is almost as nice. winning service”.
I like that El Zarape isn’t afraid to be the 2nd best margarita in the bay. Rock on with your red ribbon rita.

Benny and The Jet Fighters
I find it a bit...odd...that Elton John was sitting two seats down from the President and his wife as one of the honorees at the Kennedy Center Honors tonight. I think Bush might just be a wee bit more fabulous by osmosis.

the sound of money
There is nothing quite like talking to a lawyer to make you aware of the necessity of speaking clearly, concisely and quickly.

no, seriously.
Why haven't we thought of a nickname for the decade of 2000-2009 yet? What will VH-1 do when it's time for their decade of pop music retrospectives?
